Academic Music - Auditions

Open auditions are held the first week of the Fall and Spring semester (additional opportunities are possible, please contact the faculty for your area of study). If you plan to audition, contact the department to notify them of your intention, and confirm the exact date. The Academic Applied program is designed for study of the standard Classical repertoire; those desiring to study Jazz literature have the opportunity for study as well, but must meet the Academic program's requirements, and should also contact the Commercial Music Program. Admission to private lessons is dependent on the audition; those lacking sufficient experience, technique, or repertoire will be counseled to enroll in a performance class (beginning/advanced voice, piano class, etc.).

For those intending to declare as Music Majors:

  • Please prepare two pieces (or movements) representative of the standard repertoire of your instrument or voice; for vocalists, this should (preferably) include something in English and one other language (Italian, German, or French).
  • Upon acceptance to the program, students agree to enroll in the following classes for each semester of enrollment in Music 92AD (Applied Music):

    • Music Theory Sequence (Music 6, 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B) until completed
    • Musicianship Sequence (Music 5AD, 9AD, 10AD, 16AD) until completed
    • Three semesters of Class Piano (51A, 51B, 52AD; piano majors exempt)
    • One large day ensemble: Concert Choir (Music 11AD), Wind Ensemble (Music 46AD), Chamber Orchestra (Music 13AD); Enrollment in a night ensemble is at the discretion of the director.
